In the Company of Killers: A Gripping Debut That Stole My Heart

There are some books that pull you in just by the title and cover alone, and In the Company of Killers by Elora Cook was one of those for me. I found myself drawn to its promise of lavish settings and high-stakes drama, but little did I know that I would be swept away by Tasha Nicastro’s journey—a whirlwind of revenge, trauma, and unexpected alliances. Elora Cook’s debut is nothing short of fabulous, leaving readers like me both captivated and yearning for more.

The premise is enticing: Tasha, a rich girl seemingly living the dream, has her world torn apart when she witnesses the brutal murder of her father and sister. Suddenly thrust into the murky intrigues of the New York Mafia, she learns that she’s not only grieving her loss but also stepping into a role she never asked for. What makes this narrative truly gripping is how Tasha’s evolution is portrayed. We see her transformation from a privileged teenager into a formidable young woman determined to claim her family’s legacy.

One of the standout strengths of Cook’s writing is her ability to weave complex emotions into the characters. Tasha is a beautifully layered protagonist—headstrong and morally grey, yet undeniably relatable. I found myself rooting for her, sharing in her anger and heartbreak. Then there’s Leo Danesi, Tasha’s sworn enemy and possible love interest; his struggle to find his own identity amidst familial expectations adds depth to their tension-filled relationship. Their dynamic is reminiscent of classic enemies-to-lovers tales, yet Cook deftly avoids letting romance overshadow the central plot of revenge. Instead, we witness how Tasha wrestles with her trauma, making her journey resonate on a deeper emotional level.

The pacing of the novel kept me on the edge of my seat. I was surprised by the twists and turns that Cook so cleverly integrated, particularly that jaw-dropping ending. I will admit that when I read those last chapters, I think I might have startled a few classmates with my gasp! The way Elora Cook keeps readers guessing while revealing just enough to keep you hungry for more is nothing short of brilliant.

As much as I adored Tasha and Leo, I have to mention Ravi, her overly protective friend. Although I understood his intentions, I found him a tad annoying at times—like, let the girl breathe, right? But that tension did serve to highlight Tasha’s fierce independence, which I appreciated.

While I did have a few nitpicks—mostly about the Italian cultural nuances that a native like me couldn’t overlook—these were minor in the grand scheme of things. They certainly didn’t detract from the overall experience.

In the Company of Killers is far more than just a gripping story of revenge; it’s about resilience, the complexity of family ties, and coming into one’s own in the face of overwhelming odds. This book is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a thrilling ride filled with rich characters and intricate plot twists.

If you’re a fan of YA/Teen novels, or if you just want a well-written story that will keep you on your toes, I wholeheartedly recommend picking this one up. I cannot wait for the sequel—Elora Cook, if you’re reading this, I’m officially counting down the days until the next installment!

Whether you’re a die-hard Mafia story lover or new to the genre, Tasha Nicastro’s tale will resonate and entertain, leaving you with a satisfied smile and an eagerness for more. Trust me, this is one you won’t want to miss!

Many thanks to HarperCollins Canada and Elora Cook for allowing me the opportunity to read this captivating ARC. You won’t want to miss this one—I’ve already marked my calendar for the book event!
